Best Educational Math Apps

Play and learning in young minds are intrinsically linked. Through curiosity and interacting with the world around them they absorb information like tiny, cute, sponges. Nowadays there are many games and apps that tap into that process and provide education and entertainment in equal measure.

The digital market is thriving with so many fantastic learning apps that sometimes it can be hard to choose between them. The differences are often in the details, does it have to be free? Fun? Functional? Fully immersive? What you think will engage your prodigy in education best can be different for each and all of us.

We’ve put together a list of what we believe to be the best educational math apps to at least narrow the list. These are apps that have proven track records and a wealth of positive reviews on their respective app stores.

Counting Caterpillar

This one is currently only available on Apple products, which is a shame because it’s a truly beautiful game and we hope to see it offered on Droid too. The premise is simple enough, you perform basic arithmetic and solve numeracy problems in order to catch food and transform your caterpillar into a magnificent butterfly. The animation and design are breathtaking and as a parent, you could happily watch over your child’s shoulder as he/she plays. Progression is reward by way of a trophy case in which you can keep track of your collected butterflies and marvel at how much better at math you are now.

Mathlingo

This app is thankfully available on all devices, which is excellent because it’s an almost indispensable tool. Aimed at teaching the mathematical foundations in every form the app introduces counting, addition, subtraction, shapes, and matching skills through fun and brightly colored games and activities. There is a subscription fee as the app is still being improved, developed, and updated with new content constantly. The game tracks progress and rewards users with fanfare and trophies for achievement and the content itself slowly increases in difficulty to keep young minds on their toes. The game features text instructions, or for those who still can’t read; clear and calm vocal instruction, keep the sound on to enjoy a jaunty little soundtrack and fun sound effects too!

Dino Tim

This fantastic little app is completely free! Well, there is a payment option to disable the adverts which can pop up and prove problematic to close or skip, but apart from that completely free. The main character Dino Tim leads your child through the basics of mathematics in various different games and activities. It’s brightly colored, offering lots of fun, and addictively easy to use. It’s a great way to get your child playing and excited about education. You can even change the language and learn the basics of another language at the same time if you’re so inclined.
